YOUR INSTRUCTOR:
I stress safety as my number one basic rule. The right equipment, the proper conditions, and the depth of my knowledge sets the stage that all involved will come home safe.
I caught my first fish at the age of 5 years below Hover Dam in the state of Arizona. It was a rainbow trout and I am convinced I was “hooked” from that point on. Now, after 45 years of experience fishing lakes in over 50 countries I have come to the conclusion that there is no substitute for experience when it comes to landing fish. As with my professional life, the more you put into it, the more efficient you become. My brain is a bit larger than most fish. That is your advantage! As you take in each experience fishing wherever, for whatever type of fish, I believe that we all create a database of knowledge that plays a role in being successful or not in later situations of fishing. If you listen well, fish will tell you what to do if you want to “out-smart” them.
While many fisherman think luck is a major factor in catching fish, I honestly feel if there are fish in the area you are fishing, experience will account for 85 per cent or more of the times you land fish versus “not getting a bite”. Fish will normally react to a set of situations. It’s really that simple. Whether it is in search of food (which is quite a low per cent of the time) or just reacting as a cold-blooded animal does based upon it’s history of experiences, the answer lies in learning reactions to conditions. Fish can’t reason as we do as humans.
People will often ask me why I seem to always catch fish when they are standing right next to me, doing the same thing, and do not getting a bite. Are they really doing the exact same things I am doing? If they were, they would be inside my head concentrating as me as if I were looking through the eyes of my lure. You will also sometimes hear it called “presentation”. Very subtle differences in how a lure is presented often will make the differences between getting a strike and not.
